Why We Developed the BalanceStep Adjustable Resistance Harness

Each year 1 out of 4 older people falls each year. 1 out of 5 falls cause a serious injury (such as broken bones or head injury). Each year > 300,000 older adults are hospitalized because of a fall injury. This epidemic cost healthcare 50 Billion dollars per year!

BalanceSteps’s strategic hip placement allows older users as well as others with certain balance challenges, to more safely and easily undertake lower body strengthening exercises. Hip placement vs. ankle or knee resistance band placement can make tripping and or falling less likely while exercising. Exercising with BalanceStep strengthens lower body muscles. Strengthening  these muscles in the elderly has been proven to decrease potentially catastrophic falls. Fully 25% of elderly falls is due to age induced muscle weakness known as Sarcopenia. Sarcopenia induced muscle weakness is preventable.

Wholly self-contained. Nothing else is necessary. All that’s needed is BalanceStep & You!

In addition to the Right/Left - Front/ Back adjustability you can use the following option

  • Special attachments are strategically placed on the right and left sides of your BalanceStep harness.
    • These attachments allow for placement of External Resistance Bands. Thus, many different configurations are possible. Customize your hip strengthening Exercise session exactly as you wish!

This Customization allows for targeting those muscles desired in a focused optimal manner during each type of session.

How BalanceStep Works

BalanceStep is a novel resistance harness for balance improvement. Enhanced Exercise Training.

BalanceStep has evolved the proven effectiveness of resistance bands for physical therapy. Now, the wearer can instantly and easily adjust the tension of the multiple resistance bands. These resistance bands are arranged on the left and right sides of the harness - in the front and back. The harness rests comfortably and safely on the user’s hips. The BalanceStep harness is for lower body physical therapy.

BalanceStep harness has special attachment sites strategically placed for external band placement. This  allows quick and easy adjustability for  customization for very effective physical therapy and/or Enhanced Exercise Training.

A key safety feature for elderly users and others with certain balance problems is the safe and secure placement of the BalanceStep harness. The harness rests on the wearer’s hips. This placement allows users to more easily undertake strengthening exercises that are less likely to make them fall while doing the exercises. Strengthening lower body exercises can also help improve balance . Such strengthening can lead to fewer falls in the in these two groups. Strengthening muscles in the elderly has been proven to decrease these potentially catastrophic falls.

For ease of use, comfortable fabric loops have been placed at the end of the velcro to make it easier to unfasten the hook and loop with a tug of the user’s finger. This will help those with arthritic fingers etc.

The Science Behind BalanceStep

Let’s talk next about the proven effectiveness of resistance bands for use in both physical therapy and exercise enhancement.

Resistance bands make your muscles work against the tension the bands create. This tension, unlike conventional weights, does not depend on gravity. Resistance bands, also unlike conventional weights, provide constant tension. (Self.com March 24 2019).

A collection of studies by the NCBI-NLM (YR Yeun 2017) proves convincingly that the regular use of resistance bands helps prevent falls in the elderly. Remember - BanDRunner is for folk from 12 to 100 years of age! Further, a study (A Comparison Between Core Exercises With Theraband and Swiss Ball in Terms of Core Stabilization and Balance Performance; Pelin Aksen Cengizahn et al April 2018 Isokinetics and Exercise Science 26(1)) compared core strengthening exercises using a Swiss ball (a traditional mainstay for core exercises) vs. resistance bands. The resistance bands were equally as effective as the Swiss medicine ball!

This amazing study highlights the incredible versatility of resistance bands. Thus, resistance bands offer an alternative to using an exercise ball where balance difficulty, arthritis etc.,. may make use of a Swiss exercise ball impractical.

Resistance bands are a wonderfully effective way to gain strength, flexibility, balance, and core strength among many other benefits. Everyone from athletes to clinicians on staff at Mayo Clinic are using them for themselves and patients!
